Ian got into music in his mid-teens, which included five long years of formal tutoring in classical guitar. He also played in a band through the latter part of high school and college and in between managed to apply himself just enough to qualify in civil engineering.
Music took a back stage from the mid-eighties. Military service and a number of years concentrating on sport (running, duathlons and triathlons). An acoustic guitar was always close by.
Ian emigrated to Australia in 1996 and currently lives in Peppermint Grove, Capel.
His return to music came in 2001 (change in circumstances, y’know). He built up a repertoire of original and cover songs and found some venues to play all throughout the Southwest. This has included supporting Ian Moss as well as Joe Camilleri. Gigs have also included numerous band line-ups. Currently Ian is enjoying the independence of playing solo and his repertoire includes acoustic and electric guitar, ukulele and some harmonica. Sets include both covers and some originals.
Ian’s influences are very wide. They range from the songsmiths like Paul Simon, Shaun Mullins, John Mayer to blues stalwarts including BB King, Eric Clapton, Robert Cray and Jimi Hendrix. Then there is the alternative/fringe rock artists such as U2, Talking Heads Counting Crows, Red Hot Chili Peppers and REM. Don’t forget opportunities to air edgy rock from favourites like The Police, Nirvana, The Boom Town Rats and The Clash. Classic rock is respectfully played featuring Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Thin Lizzy, The Rolling Stones, Creedence CR, Dire Straits and Foo Fighters. And then by complete contrast David Gray, Jack Johnson and The Beatles are covered. Ian has always maintained that female artists get some of the best songs and he plays favourites form the catalogues of Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morisette and Macy Gray.
Ian has three original albums available commercially (Not Me, Polarity and Faded Memories (two-track single). These have had some minor success including one of songs being used on a movie soundtrack called ‘Faded Memories’. A new album (Growing Up) has been recorded and is currently in post-production.
